What I Miss By Being a Work at Home Mom

There are simple things that you might miss from working outside of the house like fresh coffee in the break room and restroom hand dryers.

One thing I miss is the need to get dressed in a uniform each day. My uniform was never anything formal, I was an office worker who wore pant suits and skirts; but now there is no need for even that. Another thing is that my corporate jobs always came with a Holiday bonus and vacation pay. That is something I don’t get anymore as a work from home mom and being my own boss. Other things I miss about working outside of the house are sick days and company picnics. Now I work when I’m sick from my bed with my netbook, and there is no company to picnic with. I don’t get any medical benefits or a 401-K, and I don’t accrue any stock or special privileges as a work at home mom.

What I do get from being a work at home mom is deeper than these things – it’s called time with my family.

Fortunately the financial security of a 401-K and medical benefits can come from independent programs and my spouse, while I balance our tax bracket with the expense of a home business. I get to be here for my children twenty-four hours a day, watching them grow and helping them through life. Company picnics have been replaced by family outings, and instead of a Holiday bonus I look forward to my kid’s Holiday parade. Now I get my coffee from the drive thru between the children’s activities and even though my uniform is less formal my kids don’t seem to really mind.

I have to admit that even though I love being a stay at home mom, there is really nothing that can replace the warmth of those corporate restroom hand dryers.
